Kieran Trippier has hailed the “unbelievable” training sessions that Mauricio Pochettino devises at Tottenham every day.

Speaking on the Soccer AM programme on Sky Sports on Saturday morning, the England and Spurs right-back explained what makes the Argentine such a special manager.

Trippier pointed out how Pochettino develops and improves players through what he does behind the scenes at the club’s Enfield training headquarters.

Asked about his development under the manager, Trippier replied: “It took me a good 16 months to settle in at Tottenham. But what Pochettino does really well is developing players and getting them to play for their national teams.

“His record speaks for itself – he’s got five in the Tottenham squad now and the same happened at Southampton. He makes players become bigger and better.

“He helped me develop as an attacker. He sets everything out day by day in training perfectly for the lads, the sessions are unbelievable.”

OPINION

Pochettino appears to have so many special qualities that add up to him being one of the outstanding managers in the current game. His absolute fortes appear his ability to manage and connect with modern players while improving and developing them on the training pitch. Pochettino is also tactically excellent and his game management enables Spurs to turn around their fortunes just when matches appear to be slipping away from them. Tuesday’s remarkable Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund, after they took a first-half hiding, was a perfect example. Pochettino’s critics point out the absence of silverware from a decade of management, and that is a valid point, even though Spurs do not have the resources of the real big spenders. Can he go to the next level and turn his vibrant, exciting team into a trophy-winning one? Should he do so, the Argentine would surely be able to take the pick of any jobs going, and write his own cheque at the same time.
