Tottenham are plotting a move for Celta Vigo attacker Maxi Gomez with Fernando Llorente expected to go in the summer, according to The People.

The national newspaper’s print edition (Sunday February 24th, page 54) claimed that with the Spurs forward’s £75,000-a-week contract (Source: Spotrac) ending in the summer and him having struggled as back-up to Harry Kane, he is expected to leave.

The People report that Llorente’s exit will pave the way for Spurs to make a move for Gomez, who has scored nine goal this season.

Good move for Spurs?

Yes, even if it would be a pricey one.

As the People’s report stats, West Ham were linked with Gomez in January when they seemed to be searching for a replacement for their prolific talisman Marko Arnautovic, and this shows how capable their Premier Leagues rivals thought he was.

At the age of 22-year-old, the Celtic Vigo forward is only going to get better as well and could easily be a very useful member of Spurs’ team for multiple seasons to come.

Given that he would be replacing the 33-year-old Llorente, who has struggled to be clinical since joining Mauricio Pochettino’s side, it just seems like a smart move by all accounts.

Likely to happen?

It’s hard to say it will with confidence.

While it seems very logical that Spurs could let Llorente go at the end of his current deal in order to bring in a promising young forward like Gomez, there are a few obvious doubts to be had.

Firstly you feel Gomez given his amount of goals this season and his age, would cost a huge figure and Spurs have steered away from splashing the cash in recent times.

Then there’s the fact with Pochettino preferring to only have one forward up front, Gomez may not been keen to jump to a side where he maybe rooted to the bench for the foreseeable future.
