Jim White made a Tottenham claim on talkSPORT, saying that Mauricio Pochettino’s side were “serious contenders” for the Premier League title and that if they won it would be a bigger achievement than when Leicester stunner the world in the 2015/16 season.

Talking on the Jim White Talk Show on Monday (talkSPORT, Mon, 10am), he said “They are serious contenders.

“If they were to go on and win the Premier League, would it go down as a bigger surprise and achievement than the time Leicester won the league? I think it would.

“Tottenham are doing it at the moment without key men, like Harry Kane and Dele Alli. They’ve spent nothing on transfers, unlike Leciester who spent £30million. Tottenham have spent nothing.

“In Leciester’s season, their rivals were all falling away, like Man United.

“Looking at the whole thing, looking at Pep’s rich guys at City and Klopp’s rampant players at Liverpool, the competition is much more fierce.”

He asked Danny Murphy what he thought and the BBC pundit responded with a simple “No, you’re talking nonsense.” He said that it would be a huge achievement for Spurs but that it would have nothing on the Leicester win.

“The Tottenham side is packed with international players. Leicester was a major surprise.”

OPINION

There’s no doubt that if Tottenham could overhaul Man City and Liverpool this season, it would be a massive achievement. The key difference between this season and the 2015/16 season when Leicester stunned the world is the level of the competition. Man City and Liverpool are on a different plane and are arguably two of the best sides that have ever competed in the Premier League. Spurs have had problems but they keep winning games by the odd goal and all tree sides are bound to have ups and downs between now and the season run-in. The pressure on Liverpool especially, as they fight for their first ever Premier League title, will be intense and they’ve still got to play Tottenham. It would be a massive upset but you have to think that Tottenham can’t afford to lose another game. The latest bookies odds of 25/1 are probably about right, though. It would be a major shock but really not on the same level as Leicester. They had odds of about 5,000/1 at the start of that historic season.
