Tottenham have not spent any money in the last two transfer windows, but that needs to change if the performance of one player in particular is anything to go by.

That player is right-back Serge Aurier, who made a complete mess of his display in the 2-1 defeat to Burnley on Saturday, courtesy of goals from Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes.

The 26-year-old failed to rise to the occasion in the slightest and offered very little in terms of going forward, and it was his mistake that ensured that Barnes was able to slot home the winner for the hosts at Turf Moor.

Boss Mauricio Pochettino also has Kieran Trippier to call upon in this position, but it is safe to say that the England international has had a rather poor season since returning from the World Cup.

What does Pochettino do now?

Answer – he needs to sign a right-back in the summer transfer window, as it is clear that neither player is up to scratch at the moment, especially for a team that were once in with a shout of the Premier League title.

Aurier’s display against the Clarets simply reinforced the need to sign new right-back.

Pochettino may maintain that he is happy with his squad, but if his current group of players are unable to genuinely challenge for a trophy this season, how could he possibly do so next season without signing anyone?

It is easy to see why Aurier has been on the fringes this term – he has 15 appearances in all competitions – but Trippier hasn’t hit the height of last season after this summer’s World Cup.

Either way, it is paramount that Daniel Levy dips his hand in his pocket this summer if he wants his team to be competing for honours next season.
