Christian Eriksen is invaluable to Tottenham.

There are few playmakers in world football as talented and visionary as the Danish international, and even fewer, if any who could realistically replace him in north London.

That’s why it is vital that Spurs sort out the ongoing wrangle over his new contract as soon as possible.

Tying one of their star men down to a long term deal not only protects them from losing him, but would also stand as a message of intent for their domestic and European ambitions.

That’s why the 27-year-old’s agent’s recent comments to ESPN FC, as quoted by the Mirror, are so concerning.

Martin Schoots, Eriksen’s representative, said: “Christian only wants to focus himself on football.

“Besides his technical, tactical and athletic skills, also this attitude has contributed over the years to his impressive transformation from world class talent to world class player.

“At this moment I would prefer not to join the speculations about contracts and transfers.”

It’s understandable that the playmaker doesn’t want to rush into committing his future to a club that has a tight wage structure and has yet to win any silverware during his time there, but you would assume at this stage that if Eriksen was keen on staying then he would have at least made some kind of positive hint towards a decent resolution.

At the moment, the evasiveness of his output on the matter is getting tiresome, and more than a little concerning.

Spurs fans will hope it is just diplomacy, but honestly, unless he speaks out soon, they would be forgiven for thinking that he was biding his time to see how this season pans out before doing a runner.
