Tottenham centre-back Jan Vertonghen was the hero in Tottenham’s incredible 3-0 Champions League win over Dortmund this week, playing out of position at left-back and scoring a goal and assisting another.

It was a definite man-of-the-match display and it turns out it was considered good enough to win the Spurs favourite the official Champions League Player of the Week.

Tottenham fans might know him as a rock of a centre-back now but he actually played the majority of his first season at the club as a left-back, before being moved.

And he showed that he hasn’t forgotten how it works with an absolute masterclass against the team currently at the top of the Bundesliga.

Fans might have been worrying with both Ben Davies and Danny Rose out ahead of one of the most important games of the season, but they needn’t have bothered. Jan had them covered.

The news that he was UCL Player of the Week was announced by the official Tottenham Twitter account on Friday morning and Tottenham fans flocked to Twitter to pay their respects to a player who, at 31, can still cut it down the flanks in the biggest games in Europe.
