Strachan delivers verdict on Tottenham title hopes

|

Former Scotland manager and current Sky Sports pundit Gordon Strachan has been left head over heels for Tottenham as he delivers a verdict on what he deems a potential “three horse race” at the top of the Premier League table.

The Lilywhites currently sit third in the top flight, five points behind both table toppers Manchester City, who have played a game extra, and second placed Liverpool.

Insisting that the chances of Tottenham keeping the hunt up until the end of the season is unlikely, he was still left heralding Mauricio Pochettino and his men, with a handful deemed “world class”.

Asked if Spurs could win the title, he told Sky Sports’ The Debate (06/02, 22:30): “Is it possible? Yes. Is it probable? No.

“I’ve got to say that, there’s another side that people questioned, people say he’s (Pochettino) not won anything, he needs to win a cup. No he doesn’t, he’s improved that team no end, improved the players no end.

“I think they’re a magnificent team to watch, they’ve got three or four world class players, I’d like to see them join them for a three horse race. If they get within three points or four points, it’s one of the best races you’ll ever see in this league and it’s top, top teams.”

Opinion

People had written Tottenham off but what many will see as a hurdle for the club, Pochettino should be using as an incentive. The Argentine and his men have to play both Liverpool and City before the season is out and to take the chance of three points away from their rivals while adding to their own total would put them a potential two points behind Liverpool and ahead of City if every other game was won by each team. Now it is likely that there will be points dropped elsewhere and if Tottenham want to remain with any chance of a surprise title, they have to make sure it is not them losing out. Scraping out wins by hook or by crook has to be Pochettino’s aim from here on out for Strachan is absolutely right in saying they are still in the hunt. It will take a herculean effort from the Lilywhites but it is not beyond the realms of possibility. What an exciting end to the season fans are in for.
