Paul Scholes delivered a witty put-down of Robbie Savage in a live radio chat about Mauricio Pochettino’s comments regarding Tottenham’s trophy drought.
Speaking on Robbie Savage’s Premier League Breakfast on Friday morning to his former Manchester United colleague, Savage claimed “your ego would be massive” to Scholes if the Argentine was correct in his claim that “trophies are just for ego”.
The United legend replied immediately, “…and you wouldn’t have one” in a shut-down of the former journeyman’s far less glittering playing career.
Robbie: "Pochettino saying that trophies are just for ego – if that was the case, your ego would be massive!"
Paul Scholes: "…and you wouldn't have one!"
Plenty more where that came from in @RobbieSavage8's latest Premier League Breakfast ? https://t.co/xlQrOJiOQj pic.twitter.com/ZPIBmFhpF9

OPINION
Pochettino has a good sense of humour himself and will appreciate the droll put-down from Scholes, who knows Savage well from their days in the Manchester United youth ranks. Joking aside, did Pochettino make a reasonably good point about silverware-hoarding? Not really. You could see where the Argentine was coming from as he tried to defend his record in the wake of Spurs’ cup heartache last weekend. But Pochettino would do well to remember the words of Spurs legend Danny Blanchflower, one of the club’s true greats, who coined the oft-repeated phrase that “the game is about glory”. In the modern game, when elite clubs are obsessed with top-four finishes, and securing qualification to hop on board the Champions League gravy train for another campaign, that is often forgotten. Pochettino has transformed Spurs into a successful club, no doubt. But his reign will be remembered far less fondly if he doesn’t decorate it with a trophy or two.
