Robbie Savage claimed that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino was currently the best in the world and raved about what the Spurs boss had accomplished this season.

The pundit highlighted the fact that Spurs had one foot in the Champions League quarter finals after their 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund and pointed out how they were third in the Premier League, not too far behind Manchester City.

Savage also pointed out that Pochettino had guided Spurs to this accomplishment without having Harry Kane or Dele Alli to call upon recently with the duo stuck on the sidelines injured.

“Mauricio Pochettino for me is the pound for pound best manager in the world right now, why? Because of what he has done in the Premier League this season,” said Savage in a clip uploaded to William Hill’s Twitter account.

“Third in the Premier League, five points behind Manchester City who are probably one of the best teams I have seen in the Premier League and they have a game in hand as well, and one foot in the Champions League quarter final.

“3-0 up in the first-leg and all this without Harry Kane and Dele Alli, they’ve got resilience, they’ve got desire, they’ve got energy, they keep going to the end of the game.

“It showed against Fulham with Harry Winks with the header, Lloris saving a penalty against Leicester, they have been magnificent and in Son they are certain to have a player in contention for Player of the Year.

“What an unbelievable job he is doing and if you look at the net spend of the top-six, Pochettino’s is the lowest out of the top six.”

OPINION

Wow. Savage has made a very bold claim by hailing Pochettino as the best manager in the world even if it points out that he is only basing that opinion on current form. With Tottenham not sitting top of the Premier League as well as being out of the FA Cup as well as League Cup, there are many who’d be quick to dismiss Savage’s praise. However it’s fair to say that Pochettino does deserve credit for the work he has done at Spurs, particularly this season, as his side have defied expectations. Many were ready to write Spurs off after they signed no one in the summer, and were once again poised to do the same in January, but the London club keep hanging in there. While you still wouldn’t put your money on Spurs winning the Champions League or Premier League this season, you would acknowledge that they are dark horses for both of those pieces of silverware.
