Mauricio Pochettino is ready to allow Tottenham starlet Jack Roles to leave the club this summer amid no sign he will get a new contract, according to a reliable journalist.

Football London’s Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold revealed in a Q&A for the site on Sunday (1.47pm) that he is “bewildered” the goalscoring midfielder hasn’t been offered an extension to his contract, which expires at the end of the season.

Gold is a big admirer of the 19-year-old after watching him regularly for the Spurs Under-23s and is surprised “he doesn’t seem to have caught the eye of Pochettino”.

OPINION

Pochettino is something of a messiah when it comes to developing and nurturing youthful talent, and his track record at Spurs and former clubs Southampton and Espanyol show he is one of the best in the business at it. Quite why the immensely promising Roles hasn’t blown him away is something of a mystery. Is there something going on behind the scenes fans and followers of the club are unaware of? Young central midfielders who score and create goals are worth their weight in gold, and the Spurs youngster’s track record is extremely impressive. He has scored six goals and supplied six assists from 23 youth-team games this season, a record many forwards would be proud of. Roles turns 20 this month and there is bound to be intense competition for his services, given that he will be available on a free transfer. Should Spurs fail to offer him a contract, they will not be owed any compensation costs for developing the Cyprus Under-21 international.
