To say Tottenham fans are concerned at the prospect of Christian Eriksen leaving the club this summer is something of an understatement.

The great Dane is out of contract in the summer of 2020 and widespread reports have claimed he has rejected a series of new contract offers as he prepares to test the water of elite-club interest.

The general view is that Eriksen, 26, is far more likely to leave than he is to stay.

In a question-and-answer session on Football London on Sunday (12.59pm), correspondent Alasdair Gold delivered the most encouraging update on the playmaker’s situation for quite some time.

The reliable journalist claimed, “Spurs are working hard to tie Eriksen up to a new deal and I’d heard there has been some progress in recent weeks”.

While Gold added that the lure of a new challenge at one of the Spanish giants Real Madrid or Barcelona “just can’t be ruled” and chairman Daniel Levy will have to “throw everything” at the player in the coming months “to get him to commit”, there is a real glimmer of light for Lilywhites.

None are surely in any doubt about the influence of the Denmark international, who has been back to his inventive best in recent months after a slow start to the season.

As Arsene Wenger said in the wake of his midweek masterclass against Borussia Dortmund, Eriksen is the “outstanding” player in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.

Tottenham fans will all be going wild for this treasured contract update from Gold.
