Peter Schmeichel has labelled Tottenham’s performance in their 3-1 triumph over Leicester City on Sunday as “terrible”.

The Premier League and Manchester United legend was unimpressed with the lack of creativity of Mauricio Pochettino’s side but commended them for securing a result when so far below par.

“If you want to want to compete for a Championship, you win your games when you play terrible and I thought Tottenham were terrible today,” Schmeichel told BeIN Sports in their live coverage of Sunday’s Premier League fixtures.

“They didn’t create chances. I’m trying to think of a move in the whole game when Tottenham played and created a chance. I don’t think they had a single move, whereas Harvey Barnes had three one-on-ones with the goalkeeper and Jamie Vardy had a penalty. Leicester had all the opportunities.”

OPINION

Anyone who watched Spurs labour to Sunday’s win will find it difficult to disagree with the verdict of the father of Kasper Schmeichel, who could do little about the three goals he conceded. The only three moments of real quality from the home side came through Davinson Sanchez’s diving header that converted a pinpoint Christian Eriksen cross, a well-taken goal from the Dane and Son Heung-Min’s impressive last-gasp counter-attacking goal. Other than that, this was a performance that summed up perfectly Tottenham’s ability to get the job done without playing anywhere near their best, and to paper over the cracks of the never-ending senior player injury list. The story of Spurs’ season has not been liquid football or sustained excellence. December was the only month when the team has consistently hits the heights in terms of sparkling football. The rest of the campaign has been something of a drudge. But, as Schmeichel points out, it is difficult not to admire the points accumulating.
