The entire Tottenham fanbase are likely in party mode after their club defeated Borussia Dortmund 3-0 on Wednesday as it gave them hope they could surprise a few in the Champions League this season.

Spurs looked classy in the second-half against the German giants and you wouldn’t blame supporters of Mauricio Pochettino’s side for suddenly starting to believe their club could win the prestigious tournament.

However former Arsenal man Charlie Nicholas wasn’t attaching his wagon to Spurs’ Champions League hype train as he effectively dismissed their chances in a damning verdict.

The pundit shared that he didn’t believe that they were up to the level of winning the Champions League as they were so inconsistent and it was quite a damning verdict when you consider how well they did on Wednesday.

“I don’t think they can (whether they can win Champions League), yes I am (is he underestimating them) at this level but that’s where the manager can be different from me as he sees them on a daily basis, I see them as being inconsistent for 45 minutes and good for 45 minutes, they take that risk against a PSG or a Barcelona, we’ve seen Barcelona beat them at Wembley before and you’re out this competition if you have a bad 45 minutes,” said Nicholas on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday (February 16th, 13:27pm).

While Nicholas was right to point out that Spurs’ first-half display against Borussia Dortmund was nothing to write home about, they grew into the game and the end of the day it is two-leg affair.

While PSG or Barcelona may be able to take advantage of a teams’ shortcomings, it doesn’t mean they will and also after wowing against Borussia Dortmund, the Spurs players probably have a new found belief that could see the overcome those two giants.

Pochettino’s side may still be dark horses as far as winning the Champions League is concerned, but to be as dismissive as Nicholas was is so unbelievable as Spurs keep defying the odds.

Many Tottenham fans will  fume over Nicholas’ remarks mainly due to his Arsenal connection but also because it does seem like a clear attempt to spoil their party before it has even begun.
