Alan Shearer has named Newcastle United duo Sean Longstaff and Deandre Yedlin in his Premier League team of the week.

Both players starred in the Magpies’ impressive 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town on Saturday, a result that helped them move up to 15th in the table.

Longstaff in particular has come in for high praise in recent weeks after forcing his way into Rafa Benitez’s first team plans having only made his debut on Boxing Day.

US international Yedlin was also in fine form on Saturday, playing a crucial role in both goals.

Shearer’s team of the week was announced by the Premier League through their official Twitter account.

OPINION

Longstaff has come in for a lot of praise in recent weeks, and deservedly so, but it’s good to see Deandre Yedlin receive some credit for the work he is doing too. The full-back is often cited as one of the quickest players in the English game, but more often than not, his end product lets him down. That wasn’t the case against Huddersfield, when time and time again he looked like a real threat. His link up play with Miguel Almiron down the right hand side was brilliant, and the two of them look as if they could form a real partnership. There’s a real sense that things are slowly turning round at Newcastle, and while he may not be the most gifted player in the side, if Yedlin can put in a few more performances like the one he did on Saturday, he could become a real asset for the Toon Army.
