OPINION
Newcastle United’s mid-season friendly against CSKA Moscow was attracting plenty of interest from the club’s supporters on Saturday. It may not be a competitive assignment for Rafael Benitez’s side, but the clash against the Russian side – who played in the Champions League this season – certainly got fans talking. The match at the Pinatar Arena, in the Murcia region on the south-east coast of Spain, was 1-1 at half-time after Abel Hernandez equalised shortly before the break following Salomon Rondon’s early opener. The Newcastle goal owed much to excellent work on the right flank from DeAndre Yedlin. The right-back is a mainstay of the team, starting 23 of their Premier League matches this season, but one criticism is that his end product does not always match his energy, athleticism and extreme pace. Supporters were gushing in their tributes to Yedlin’s first-half performance, with some hoping he can be effective when the team are next in Premier League action against Huddersfield on Saturday week.
