OPINION
When Manchester United fans saw that Scott McTominay had been chosen to start against Liverpool in the heart of midfield, most of them will have put their heads in their hands. The academy graduate does not have the greatest of reputations amongst the Old Trafford faithful, and Sunday’s match against their bitter rivals hardly seemed the time or place to give him an opportunity to prove his critics wrong. In fairness to the youngster, however, he stepped up to the plate and barely put a foot wrong against the Reds. He fought hard and was economical in possession, remaining unfazed even as those around him kept dropping like flies through injury. It was a mature and impressive performance from a player who sometimes doesn’t get the credit he deserves and hopefully it will go a long way to silencing some of his doubters. McTominay is never going to be the most glamorous of options, but he doesn’t have to be. He just needs to be a reliable presence in the centre of the park and he could go on to have a very long, very positive career with Manchester United. Potentially, Sunday was the first step towards that.

Lingard sub has backfired big time. McTominay has been very brave. So have the others who are still playing. Most bizarre game ever. Injuries free injuries.
