OPINION
Ashley Young has done a pretty admirable job as a full-back over the past few years, but every now and again the experienced Manchester United man will put in the kind of performance that reminds you irrefutably that it is not his natural position. His first half against Liverpool was on of those performances. For large spells he looked leggy and indecisive, and if there are two traits that Jurgen Klopp’s side will punish in a heartbeat it is those two. Young has always felt like a temporary fix to a very long term issue, and on the basis of Sunday afternoon’s performance, he cannot continue to play at the highest level for too much longer. Diogo Dalot is waiting in the wings, and will surely have a massive future ahead of him at Old Trafford, but at the moment, while they are still in the midst of that period of transition, United run a risk every time they elect to start Young. The majority of the time he is good, and at times he is exceptional, but there is always the lingering concern that he will put in the kind of display he did in the first half against the Reds – and that’s a huge risk.
