When it was announced by Liverpool on Monday morning that Joe Gomez will undergo ankle surgery, the immediate reaction of fans was that of despair.

The Merseyside giants did not put a timescale on the defender’s return, but many claimed they might not see him in a red shirt again this season.

Mirror correspondent David Maddock has subsequently delivered a hugely encouraging update that will surely have the entire fanbase dancing with joy.

Writing on his personal Twitter account early on Monday morning, Maddock explained that Gomez’s operation is “routine” and “designed to speed up the healing process”.

The long-standing journalist revealed that surgery will not delay the England international’s comeback “any further” and predicted he could be back in action by “early March”.

There is not a Liverpool supporter who would not be over the moon about that scenario.

Everyone watching Gomez’s Rolls-Royce performances in the first half of the campaign were blown away by his maturity and authority. To say he is a class act is stating the bleedin’ obvious.

If there is a better young defender in the Premier League, he has yet to announce himself and, aged 21, only injury threatens to block the ex-Charlton man’s stroll to true excellence.

Liverpool know they have a real gem on their hands, and there is now a sense he can play a major role in the title run-in. That is brilliant news.
