Paul Scholes has insisted Manchester City are marginal favourites to win the title ahead of Liverpool but predicted a “tight” race between “two great teams”.

Speaking to Robbie Savage’s Premier League Breakfast (23:20) on BBC Radio Five Live on Friday morning, the Manchester United legend was asked who of City and Liverpool he wanted to win the title.

“I’m not too bothered,” Scholes said. “They’re two great teams, they play brilliant football and both having mini wobbles at the minute. We saw the nervousness with Liverpool the other night. It’s only January. Wait until you get to March, April, with four or five games left.

“City’s experience of being there might just get them through it, but I think it’s going to be tight.”

OPINION

Liverpool fans will be chuffed that Scholes, a 13-times title winner with United, no less, think they are a “great” side who play “brilliant football”. That is quite a compliment from an ex-player whose opinion will matter to them, despite his obvious lifelong allegiance to the red of Manchester. Scholes’ claim that City are slight favourites is understandable, too, especially as Liverpool could not take the chance to go seven points clear on Wednesday, when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Leicester City at home. As the pundit points out, there were clear nerves at Anfield, especially in the second half as the crowd fretted over the possibility of not getting the three points, and how Jurgen Klopp’s players cope with the pressure is going to be absolutely key to whether the club can end their 29-year title wait.
