Martin Keown refused to rule out Tottenham winning the Champions League this season even if Manchester City are the safe answer when asked which English team is more likely to win the tournament.

The BBC pundit was asked by Dan Walker whether Manchester City were the Premier League side with the best chance of winning the Champions League and Keown wasn’t so sure.

Keown pointed out that Spurs simply wouldn’t go away and you have to ask yourself where Liverpool were in the Premier League when they won the illustrious tournament.

“City is the safe answer but don’t bet against Spurs y’know, think when Liverpool won in 2005 where were they fifth? Not sure but they won’t go away will they Spurs? Brilliant performance in midweek,” said Keown on BBC One’s Football Focus (Saturday February 16th 12:59pm).

OPINION

Is the former Arsenal favourite trying to make Tottenham fans dream? It certainly seems like that as it seems to think Spurs have a realistic chance of lifting the Champions League. In fact the pundit seems all but ready to say that Spurs are his dark horse as far as the contenders to win the tournament this season are concerned. It’s no surprise that Keown isn’t ready to write off Spurs’ chance of the Champions League just yet as you’d be foolish to do that after witnessing the way they terrorised Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday. Mauricio Pochettino’s side brushed the German side apart in the second-half of that match like no one expected them to, and they’re a team that like to defy expectations. While some Spurs fans will be trying to keep their feet on the ground over their side’s Champions League ambitions, would it hurt to dream a little? Imagine the scenes if Spurs lift the Champions League trophy.
