Maxi Gomez to West Ham was touted a lot in the January transfer window, but it was a move that never ended up materialising for the Celta Vigo striker.

However, Manuel Pellegrini will be counting his lucky stars that a transfer for the £40 million [Sky Sports] forward did not go through, as he is has been pretty woeful lately.

The 22-year-old has gone completely off the boil recently by managing to only muster up one goal during January, and he hit a low at the weekend after being sent off – and seeing as his team have only won one game in their last six, it is clear that he is not making such a massive impact.

The Hammers look to have avoided a major blunder here, and they will certainly be glad not to have signed an attacker whose form has declined rapidly.

He looked promising at the start of the season, netting nine goals in the process, but since then everything seems to have gone to pot for the Uruguayan.

Many fans would not have been too happy if the club splashed out on Gomez only to see him make zero impact, so it is safe to say that the Hammers have dodged a real bullet here.

Now that Marko Arnautovic is back in the fold with Javier Hernandez as his back-up, the need to sign Gomez is not of paramount importance anymore.

If anything, he looks like he is a liability after his recent sending off, so West Ham will be rather elated that they did not throw money down the drain in signing him.

They may go after him again in the summer, who knows – but if they do, fingers crossed he would have improved considerably by then.
