Murphy: Mourinho could manage Everton

Danny Murphy boldly claimed that former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho could one day manage Everton.

The retired midfielder shared that he didn’t think it was crazy idea if the experienced manager, who won the Premier League three times with Chelsea, one day ended up being appointed Toffees boss.

Murphy acknowledged that Mourinho was “very Marmite” and could be an expensive risk, but if the Toffees were looking to compete at the top-end of the Premier League then why not going after someone who has done exactly that.

“I don’t think it’s that crazy a thought due to the financial clout they’ve got, I think it’s a delicate one when you start at Everton you want to give a manager a chance, I don’t know if all Evertonians would go for that as he is a certain type, Mourinho is very Marmite and could be an expensive risk,” said Murphy on talkSPORT (Monday February 10th, 12:12).

“He has won stuff, he has got good contacts with agents and players, but I think maybe not yet, it’s one of those where it could happen down the line, I know there’s always a risk he could take another job but yeah I don’t think it’s crazy.

“If Everton are looking bigger and want to compete why not get a manager who has competed, the only thing with Mourinho in this county is he has not done it as you could argue that when he went to Chelsea they aren’t the powerful force they are now.”

OPINION

It’s incredibly bold of Murphy to suggest that Everton may be a club in Mourinho’s future as he would be very expensive and he’s never really stuck around at a club for that long. The Portuguese boss doesn’t seem to fit the bill of what the Toffees should be looking for, as they surely want someone at the club who would bring stability. While Mourinho has many things going for him, stability is not one of his qualities. If Mourinho does one day end up managing the Toffees then it would be a major surprise. The only agreeable points about Murphy’s opinion on the former Man United boss is that it’s clear he would divide Everton supporters if he arrived and he would come with a giant price tag.  Also it’s worth noting that Murphy’s remarks on Mourinho’s Chelsea spell border on being eye-rolling as he achieved a lot at that club when it’s all said and done.
