Everton manager Marco Silva is expected to retain support from the top brass at Everton over his long-term future at the club despite the club’s poor run of form this season, according to reputable journalist John Cross.

The Mirror’s chief football writer claimed in an interview on the Keys and Gray show on beIN Sports that the Toffees boss looked likely to remain in the dugout at Goodison in the near-future and would probably stay until the end of the season at the earliest, unless something “catastrophic” were to happen.

Everton sit 15th in the form table over the last 10 Premier League games, behind relegation battlers Newcastle United, Southampton and Cardiff City, with three wins and a draw to give them 10 points.

Cross said: “I’d be ever so surprised, unless something catastrophic happens from here on in, if he doesn’t get the rest of the season. I would still expect Marco Silva to have some support in the longer-term.”

Opinion

Much like Sam Allardyce before him, Silva is starting to divide opinion at Goodison Park and the pressure is mounting on his shoulders after a poor run of form. The axe was quickly swung on Ronald Koeman last season after he failed to impress and there was little faith shown in Allardyce as a long-term manager for the club, so will the Portuguese coach find himself able to avoid being kicked out the dugout? Cross seems to think so and considering how long the Toffees pursued him for, with the whole saga with Watford boiling over as a result, it would not give any future managers much faith in keeping their job if he were to go. Whatever happens, they should at least give him until the end of the season. It is not just the manager who is disappointing – the players are letting him down – and he has shown that on his day the Toffees are a force to be reckoned with. It is just that those days are few and far between at the moment.
