OPINION

Everton have had all sorts of defensive issues so far this season, but it’s hard to tell whether their problems stem from personnel or tactical flaws. Certainly Marco Silva has taken his fair share of stick for his insistence on using zonal marking at set-pieces, but his has to be said that his defence hardly cover themselves in glory either. Michael Keane, for instance, showed just how disappointing the Toffees backline can be with a fairly dire first half display against Watford on Saturday. Confusion has been the main symptom of Everton’s woes at the back, and the England international gave a perfect encapsulation of this against the Hornets. Rather than sticking to his man or being proactive in his defending, Keane was caught out on a number of occasions calling for decisions instead of trying to prevent danger. It’s an unfortunate part of the modern game that so many players feel the need to appeal to referees, so often, but it’s particularly infuriating when that takes priority over them actually doing there jobs. Something needs to change at Everton, and fast, and if Keane continues to put in performances like his one on Saturday, he could be one of the first players to go.
