Everton fans destroy Sigurdsson v Watford

|

OPINION

Gylfi Sigurdsson was meant to signify a new era for Everton. The Icelandic international came in from Swansea City at a substantial cost for the Toffees, and was expected to become their talismanic playmaker. At times, he has looked as if he could easily fulfil that role, and has looked inventive and a real goal threat. In recent weeks, however, the 29-year-old has been well off the pace and brings an element of imbalance to the Blues’ team. Against Watford he looked poor again, and with Marco Silva coming under increasing pressure for the lacklustre performances of his side, the last thing he can afford are passengers. Sigurdsson, usually so posted and cutting in possession spent most of the match looking anonymous and a little jaded. Form is temporary, but class is permanent, as the saying goes, and there’s no doubt that the midfielder has it in his locker to produce a moment of magic out of nowhere, but that doesn’t excuse the low general standard of his play at the moment, and it’s getting to a point where he surely has to be dropped. Rigidly sticking to a way of plying that is blatantly not working could cost Silva dearly in the coming weeks, and not even Sigurdsson can be exempt from the axe.
