Everton tabled a £24.5million offer for Espanyol striker Borja Iglesias in the last transfer window, according to Galicia Press.

The Spanish outlet reports on their website that the Toffees triggered the release clause in the contract of the centre-forward – who has nine goals in 22 appearances this season – to Goodison Park in January, but the attacker chose to remain in La Liga rather than make the switch to the Premier League.

The 26-year-old arrived at Espanyol from Celta Vigo in the summer and the report states that the 6ft 2in [Transfermarkt] player was keen on ending the season in Spain.

OPINION

Iglesias does not have the best record of any strikers out there, but he would have been an attractive option for Marco Silva considering the lack of firepower that they have in their squad. Signing a striker in January would have been ideal for Everton, but unfortunately for them, the player himself opted to stay in La Liga despite the £25 million offer. The Toffees could have really done with the signing of Iglesias, especially with the crisis that they currently find themselves in in regards to their poor run of form. Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Cenk Tosun are the only recognised strikers who are capable of starting, so why didn’t Everton pursue someone else when their bid was knocked back? They will have to wait until the summer to sign a striker now, which means that they will have to struggle on until the end of the season with their current crop.
