It is no secret that Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye was keen on a move to Paris Saint-Germain in the January transfer window, but he now looks to be staying at Goodison Park.

However, the player who was drafted in to take his place in the starting XI against Huddersfield on Tuesday will leave him rather concerned about his first team future.

That player is Tom Davies, who was rather impressive against the Terriers – and he certainly does not warrant being dropped for the next match against Wolves.

Yes, Gueye is out with a groin injury, but that does not mean that Davies should suddenly make way for him if he is passed fit for selection.

The 20-year-old provided the assist for Richarlison to score the only goal of the game, and overall put in a very decent shift that deserved all the plaudits that came its way.

Nevertheless, Gueye must be sweating over his first team future after such an accomplished performance from the young ace and he should not be taking his place in the side for granted.

Anyway, who knows whether the £45,000-a-week [Spotrac] player will be in the right frame of mind to be playing after such a frenzied pursuit from PSG.

Davies is undroppable after this outing and he thoroughly deserves further opportunities to impress Marco Silva and stake his claim for a starting spot.

He is not the finished product just yet, but increased game time will allow him to unleash his potential over time – something which he has started to show glimpses of.

Davies is a star in the making for Everton, and he has shown that he is crucial to the team’s success with his excellent contribution on Tuesday, much to the dismay of Gueye.
