Jamie Carragher revealed that he feels sorry for Chelsea midfielder Jorginho as he struggles to perform to the level of his ability due to being man-marked.

The former Liverpool player shared that the 27-year-old midfield enforcer is undroppable to Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri as without him then the manager’s system is compromised.

Carragher added that Jorginho needs help due to being man-marked in games and claimed that even Eden Hazard would struggle if opponents gave him similar treatment.

“Faced with the challenge of tweaking his 4-3-3 system, Sarri’s response has disappointed,” wrote the pundit in his column for The Telegraph.

“He won’t replace Jorginho because without him the system is compromised, but I feel sorry for the midfielder because any player who is man-marked will find it difficult – as we have seen with Eden Hazard.

“When you are man-marked it is a sign of respect, Jorginho needs help.”

OPINION

Carragher is spot-on with his remarks on Jorginho and the midfielder has been unfairly criticised this season. The Brazilian has featured 29 times this season and seems to get stick for only scoring one goal, despite that not really being his role in the team. Jorginho is the ideal player to roam in the middle of the pitch and link the side’s attack and defence in order to make them a formidable unit.  However as Carragher has pointed out that simply hasn’t happened due to the player getting marked out of games, as Chelsea’s opponents recognise how important he is to Sarri’s style of play. It’s unclear how Jorginho’s teammates can help the player improve his form as opponents aren’t suddenly going to stop man-marking him if they think he is a threat. It seems that the only way Jorginho might flourish at Stamford Bridge is if Sarri changes his rigid system and gives Jorginho a new role in the team that sees him able to utilise his ability to the maximum.
