Steve Bruce has called on Mauricio Pochettino to steer Tottenham to the Premier League title ahead of Manchester City and Liverpool.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT on Friday morning, the Sheffield Wednesday manager made clear his allegiance to stand-in host Ally McCoist.

Asked if, as a Manchester United legend, he would be rooting for Spurs, Bruce replied: “Absolutely. Come on Mauricio Pochettino.”

OPINION

Bruce’s live radio response will certainly go down well with Man United and Spurs fans eager for City and Liverpool to be denied the league title in May. The chances of the veteran manager – and Pochettino – getting his wish is unlikely, however. Spurs have bounced back from double cup heartache to win their last two league fixtures, but they have a lot of ground to make up on the leading duo, who have stronger squads than the Londoners and have been more convincing across the entirety of the campaign. Pochettino has done a marvellous job of papering over the cracks at Spurs this season, not least following the injuries sustained to star duo Harry Kane and Dele Alli last month, but there is still a sense his side will do well to finish third in the league and fend off the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal for a Champions League slot. Whenever Tottenham look like clawing back ground with the top two, they tend to drop points. Expect that trend to continue.
