Arsenal were beaten 3-1 by Man City on Sunday afternoon and once again pundits pointed to their defence as the big issue that manager Unai Emery has to sort out.

Talking on the Sky Sports live coverage of the game (Sky Sports, Sun, 4pm) Jamie Carragher pointed to two Arsenal defenders who let the team down.

“Lichtensteiner is not good enough, maybe you could add because of his age,” said Carragher.

“And the chap next to him, Mustafi hasn’t been good enough since he walked through the door at Arsenal.

“To see Arsenal defend like that, there’s a big job for Unai Emery there.”

OPINION

Arsenal conceded after less than a minute after Alex Iwobi gave the ball away on the edge of the penalty area. And, despite the away side getting back into the game with an equaliser against the run of play, this was a sobering defeat for Arsenal fans. 3-1 against Man City might not look that bad on paper but the result was never in doubt and Arsenal didn’t have an attempt on goal in the second-half of the game. They’re a whole level below Man City and when you look at the Arsenal team you know it’s going to take major surgery to put things right. Will Emery get the freedom and the money in the summer to bring in the players he needs to completely change the squad he inherited from Arsene Wenger? As Carragher has pointed out, the defence is the big problem but it’s not the only one.
