West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed he has serious doubts over whether Jack Wilshere will be able to feature again this season as injury once again plagues the midfielder.

The 27-year-old had started the campaign as a mainstay in the Irons’ line up, making four starts, but saw himself sidelined due to an ankle injury which has seen him play just five minutes since.

Delivering an update from the training ground, Pellegrini revealed worries his season could already be over, joining the likes of Andriy Yarmolenko, Winston Reid and Carlos Sanchez as those out until summer at the earliest.

He told Football.London: “Jack Wilshere, I have some doubts if he will be ready (to play again this season), so we have a lot of players who will continue to recover from their injuries.”

Opinion

When West Ham signed Jack Wilshere on a free transfer last summer, there were obviously going to be fears about his injury record and it seems as though those worries have come to be true. Be it terrible fortune or just the way his body is, you cannot help but feel sorry for Wilshere, whose career has been decimated by his problems. He looked to be one of the most exciting English midfielders of his generation during his time at Arsenal – when he was fit, of course – but things have gone drastically downhill since. He is a big name without any real justification, having always struggled to show off his talents for long periods in the game. West Ham took a gamble on his capture and so far it has failed to pay off. The club might well be best cutting their ties with him this summer, for he is only draining their resources sat out on the sidelines.
