Nottingham Forest manager Martin O’Neill has confirmed that Rangers loanee Joe Worrall is unlikely to be at Ibrox next season as he plans to use the centre back in his own side.

The Championship outfit allowed the defender to move to Glasgow on a temporary spell until the end of the season, an arrangement in the loan terms meaning that should Worrall play a certain amount of games any recall clause would be void.

Speaking of the Gers powerhouse, O’Neill admitted he would have liked to see him back at the City Ground in January but that he would have to wait until the summer instead as he gets excited over his return to England.

He told the Daily Record: “He is doing well there, which is good. I think that whatever arrangement was made, he ended up playing the required number of games for Rangers to keep him at the club. Otherwise he would have been here and there is a fairly decent chance he would have been playing for us.

“I wasn’t around at the time and I can understand how these arrangements are made. But there was no way back for us, in that aspect. So, listen, we will get on with it. I think he would have been around the scene now, in this moment.

“He is somebody we will very much look forward to working with next season. Absolutely. Very much so.”

Opinion

Worrall has been someone who has divided opinion during his spell at Ibrox, with many disappointed by his performances despite being a regular in the side under Steven Gerrard. As such, you can expect that there will not be too much disappointment at the prospect of him not returning to Glasgow next season – although it does leave something of a gap in the side when it comes to the heart of defence. He has not been an awful option to call upon and if he could eradicate the regular errors in the side then he could be a competent defender at the top of the Scottish Premiership. O’Neill certainly seems to have been left impressed by what he has witnessed from the Gers loanee and so he will be hoping to get the best out of him. Losing him could be a big blow to the Light Blues next season but for now there are not going to be many tears shed as and when he does eventually depart.
