Jamie O’Hara has advised Tottenham to sign two “world-class” players if they want to compete for silverware and ensure that manager Mauricio Pochettino stays put in North London.

Pochettino has done a fantastic job with Spurs but speculation about him leaving the club has been rife ever since Jose Mourinho was sacked by Manchester United.

The Times reported in December that the Argentine wants to become the permanent manager of United in the summer and since then, his stock has only risen after a series of brilliant results despite injuries to key players such as Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

Former Tottenham midfielder O’Hara believes that the best way for Daniel Levy to ensure that Pochettino stays is to invest in the playing squad and oversee the arrival of new players that can be an improvement on what is already at the club.

“I gave them a bit of stick to be honest because I thought they needed to go out and buy a striker, they really needed to if they wanted to compete,” O’Hara told talkSPORT on Thursday, as shown by the radio channel’s official Twitter account.

“And you know, Heung-min Son’s stepped up to the plate and they looked such a fantastic side last night. I mean, Dortmund are the best team in Germany right now.”

O’Hara added: “They need to sign someone. They’ve come to the point now where the stadium’s nearly ready, we understand that they haven’t been able to sign because of putting all the money into the stadium.

“Tottenham, if they want to compete and keep hold of Pochettino, they’re going to have to sign a couple of world-class players.

“It has to happen.”

OPINION

Tottenham will without doubt sign players in the summer. Toby Alderweireld might be on his way due to the widely-reported £25million release clause in his contract, Fernando Llorente’s deal expires and Mousa Dembele is yet to be replaced since leaving for China in January. So that’s at least three players that Spurs will sign once the season is over, and all of them have to be top additions for the North London club. O’Hara does make a good point about Tottenham needing these kind of players to have a better chance of winning major honours, but to keep hold of Pochettino? The ex-Southampton boss seems happy with life at Spurs. He never seems frustrated about things and even though Levy must be one of the most frustrating people to work with in world football, the two compliment each other perfectly. No amount of money will convince Levy to let Pochettino go and surely he wouldn’t take a step down to Manchester United, who look like they might be better off keeping Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at this rate.
