Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo has heaped praise on wing-back Matt Doherty for his performances so far this season.

The Irishman was instrumental again on Sunday afternoon as he laid on the assist for Wanderers’ winning goal in their FA Cup victory over Bristol Rovers, and his boss was quick to highlight his importance to the side.

Speaking after the game on BT Sport, Nuno said: “[He’s] fantastic. He has a big heart, he goes up and down, he doesn’t rest.

“It’s a tough job, but he keeps on running. I encourage him, and I encourage him to put the ball in the net.

“We are very, very happy with him. Last season he did a fantastic season, and this [season] also was a big challenge for him to prove himself in the Premier League, and he’s doing so well.”

OPINION

It’s no wonder that Nuno is over the moon with Doherty this season. The Irish international has been in top class form and has been one of the surprise packages of the Premier League campaign. With his tireless work ethic and positive attacking play Doherty is as much a threat going forward as he is a solid option at the back, and in many ways he encapsulates the role of the modern fun-back perfectly. To many Wolves fans, his success this season will come as no surprise, but to the rest of the watching English game, the cat is well and truly out of the bag now. Keeping a hold of him may prove to be difficult if he keeps up this level of performance, but the club loves him and vice versa, and Nuno will no doubt have him earmarked as a crucial figure to this Wanderers side for many years to come.
