Leeds United bid a figure of £875,000 to take Swansea City’s Daniel James on loan as his move to Elland Road collapsed in a late twist in the January transfer window, according to the Times.

The newspaper revealed the new figures regarding the Whites’ attempted swoop for the Welsh winger on their website, with the loan offer said to have had a purchase clause which could have risen to £10million if Marcelo Bielsa’s side were to secure promotion come the end of the season.

It was reported that James was on the brink of signing for Leeds on deadline day but that Swansea pulled the plug to keep him on board at the Liberty Stadium.

Opinion

If this report is to be believed then Leeds really were willing to splash the cash on getting James over the line in January. The fee of nearly £1million for just his loan is quite something but the fact they were ready to pay out a huge £10million if he helped them seal a return back to the promised land of the Premier League highlights just how important they thought he would be in their side. Obviously they missed out and he remains with the Welsh side but considering their pursuit over the winter window it would come as no surprise to see them chase his capture again this summer- regardless of which division Leeds are in. With that £10million offer from January, that is the sort of money that Swansea will be holding out for – and perhaps even more if he continues to impress in the Championship this season. One to watch for the supporters at Elland Road.
