Former Arsenal player Paul Merson has made a huge claim about Tottenham, saying that he doesn’t think any Arsenal players would get in their side at the moment.

Merson – still a big Arsenal fan – was talking on Sky Sports News (Sky Sports, Saturday, 1pm) in a week when the Gunners lost to BATE Borisov in the Europa League on Thursday and Spurs notched an incredible 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

“I’m finding it hard to get an Arsenal player in the Tottenham team,” Merson said. “How has that changed so quickly?”

“It’s not like Tottenham have broken the bank. They haven’t done that. The other day, the team they [Arsenal] got beat by, I can’t even bring myself to say they’re average. They’re that bad Arsenal will win the next leg four or five nil.”

OPINION

Oh dear. It’s been a shocking week for Arsenal fans, having to suffer Tottenham blowing away Dortmund in the Champions League with two of their best players missing. Ian Wright heaped praise on Spurs on Wednesday night on Twitter and then had to take down his tweet after getting what he called “vile abuse” from Arsenal fans. That’s not going to change things for the Arsenal fans, but it shows how badly they’ve got it at the moment, turning on one of their heroes. Then, their side went to BATE and lost, with Alexandre Lacazette getting himself sent off in the process. BATE aren’t a good side. But then neither are Arsenal at the moment. It looked like Unai Emery was going to turn things around at the start of the season, but the wheels have come well and truly off the bus and it’s hard to see how he builds a new team from this one’s ashes. He needs to perform major surgery and the question will be, will he get enough money to do what he needs to in the summer? Merson saying no Arsenal players would get in the Spurs side is a shocking thing for Gunners fans to have to hear from one of their heroes.
