Neil Lennon cancelled a flight to Qatar on Monday night amid speculation about him returning to Celtic, according to Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge.

The reporter claimed via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday that Lennon, 47, was due to jet out to Doha, but developments at Celtic Park have seen the ex-Hibernian manager tear up those plans.

Celtic confirmed on Tuesday that Brendan Rodgers has been granted permission to enter talks with Leicester and the Evening Times has reported that Lennon is expected to replace him as Hoops boss for the rest of the season.

OPINION

It really does seem as though Lennon will be returning to Celtic, on a temporary basis at least. Lennon will surely treat his second stint at Parkhead as an interview in a bid to try and win the permanent job at the end of the season, but there is no way that Peter Lawwell should entertain that idea when the Hoops have the potential to hire someone game-changing in the summer. Lennon should keep the ship steady for the rest of the season. He knows some of the players already and it goes without saying that he is a Celtic man through and through, so he should be a safe pair of hands for now. Lawwell really needs to push the boat on though on finding a permanent replacement for Rodgers. The ex-Liverpool boss was a coup for Celtic when he joined them in 2016, but they are going to need a bigger coup now. The Bhoys have plateaued this season. They have done worse in Europe and there have been times where they have looked a bit uneasy in the race for the Scottish Premiership title. They need a massive lift and they need a top-class manager.
