It seems that since Leeds United’s failed move over the January window, Swansea City’s Dan James has taken his performances to the next level.

He might not have shone at Elland Road when the Swans were beaten 2-1 in their last Championship outing but his performance in their FA Cup clash against Brentford would have had tongues wagging in both South Wales and West Yorkshire.

As reported by the Times, the Whites were fervently chasing the 21-year-old’s capture over the winter window with a loan bid worth nearly £1million, as well as a purchase clause in the region of £10million.

Still with the Welsh side, James’ focus will now be on getting his current club as high up the table as possible – and it seems as though manager Graham Potter is wanting to reward the winger with a new contract.

With the Times reporting that James is on just £2000-a-week at Swansea, the manager told the newspaper: “The answer is yes [we want him to sign a new deal] but it’s not as simple as that. All parties would have to agree.”

James looks brilliant for such a young talent – stealing the show in his side’s 4-1 thrashing of Brentford in the FA Cup – and with Swansea looking ready to tie him down to a new deal, Leeds have got to accelerate their pursuit for his capture.

Knowing that the Whites are ready to pounce in summer could leave James reluctant to pen a new contract in Wales, improved terms giving the Swans the bargaining power to price prospective buyers out of a deal for his capture.

There is no doubting Leeds will be willing to offer a massive rise in money – not to mention the prospect of playing Premier League football if they earn promotion – and for that reason their efforts have got to be ramped up after Potter’s revelation.
