ITV pundit Lee Dixon has claimed that Sean Longstaff will quit Newcastle United to head to Germany soon enough.

Longstaff, 21, has broken into Rafa Benitez’s first team over the last month and made a very good account of himself in the 1-1 draw with Wolves at Molineux on Monday night, which led to praise from Gary Lineker.

Magpies legend Alan Shearer agreed with Lineker’s glowing review of the young midfielder, however Dixon believes that Longstaff’s time in the senior squad at St James’ Park will be short-lived.

“He’ll be off to Germany before we know it,” said Dixon via his personal Twitter account on Monday night.

OPINION

It’s all the rage at the moment to link young English players with moves to Germany. Jadon Sancho and Reiss Nelson have been in superb form in the Bundesliga at their respective clubs while Ademola Lookman and Reece Oxford have also had loan spells in Germany recently. Longstaff is good but at the moment, it’s unlikely that he would be attracting attention from anywhere. The 21-year-old has only just got into Benitez’s plans and all his efforts right now should be focused on him staying in the starting line-up, especially once the likes of Jonjo Shelvey return to fitness. Longstaff is a good young player and is showing the makings of a future England international, however he will only reach that if he is playing regularly. If he does lose his place in the starting line-up over the next couple of months then moving on would be a good idea, but only if it was to join a team that would play him regularly.
