Newcastle United captain aimed a slight dig at Wolves, suggesting that he doesn’t know how they are so high up the Premier League table.

The Midlands club snatched a last minute equaliser against the Magpies on Monday night to help them remain in seventh place in the league on their first season back in the top flight, but Lascelles was less than impressed with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

Speaking to the Chronicle, he said: “No disrespect to Wolves – and I know they have spent a lot of money – but I don’t know how they are where they are.

“I think the difference has been, not our performances, they have been good, but what we lack is being streetwise on the pitch.

“Small fouls in the right areas and things like that, it makes a massive difference.”

OPINION

Lascelles’ comments seem a little bit daft really, and perhaps a little bitter. Wolves may not have been at their best on Monday night, or when they beat Newcastle with a last minute winner at St. James’ Park earlier in the season, but anybody who has watched them will know full well how they are where they are. Their success has been built on bold, attacking football that is well suited to building a side capable of making a real go of life in the Premier League. At times they have been outstanding this season, and that shouldn’t be discredited simply because they had an off day against one side who, by the way, they still managed to take four points off this season. Lascelles’ comments serve no real purpose, and ultimately make him look like a bit of a sore loser. Perhaps Newcastle should have gotten more out of last Monday’s clash, and perhaps on another day they would have, but that shouldn’t detract from Wolves’ remarkable return to life in the top flight.
