Serge Atakayi has revealed that he is close to returning to full fitness after the young Rangers forward suffered a foot injury in the 7-1 win against Motherwell in November.

The 20-year-old attacker made his Gers debut in the demolition job at Ibrox, but according to the Scottish Sun, he has since had to undergo surgery on his injured foot.

However Atakayi has now suggested via his personal Instagram account that his return to action is “not at all far”, adding that it could be “soon”.

It was such a brilliant win for Rangers when they hammered Motherwell 7-1 and it was the perfect game for Steven Gerrard to hand Atakayi his senior debut for the club when he decided to substitute him into the action. However his debut only lasted 17 minutes before he suffered a foot injury, turning what should have been a perfect moment for the 20-year-old into a real blow. Hopefully Atakayi can still prove to Gerrard that he is first team quality, but the arrival of Bournemouth forward Jermain Defoe in the January transfer window will make it that extra bit harder for him to break into the Gers boss’ plans. Atakayi will probably have to settle for reserve team football for the first few weeks of his return to full fitness, just to get up to speed again. Maybe Gerrard will call on the Finland Under-19 international once the season nears it’s conclusion.
