Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham has confirmed that he has held talks with manager Steven Gerrard over the potential of leaving Ibrox in a search for regular first team football.

The 28-year-old was the first choice between the sticks last season but the arrival of Allan McGregor has pushed him down into a backup role, his appearance against St Johnstone on Saturday just his second league outing of the season.

The experienced shot stopper has admitted that he is looking for much more regular action in the first team and said he would weigh up his options in the summer after holding talks with Gerrard over a potential departure.

He told the Daily Record: “I won’t put a timescale on it. I’ll look at all the options that are available to me and I’ll make decisions based on that. So we’ll see where we’re at come the end of the season.

“We’ve had discussions and he (Gerrard) knows I want to play. But I also know Allan’s playing really well, so it’s a difficult situation I’m in.

“I’m here until the end of the season and we’ll review it then.”

Opinion

There is no doubting that Foderingham is deserving of playing on a regular basis – just not at Rangers. He lacks the desired quality that McGregor possesses and while he might have kept a clean sheet in his latest appearance he did not look all that convincing. It seems almost inevitable that he will be on his way come the summer and he will be sent off with warm regards by the Rangers faithful, who will no doubt appreciate his efforts but know he is just not at the required standard to take the Light Blues back to the heights they want to hit. However, with McGregor heading towards the end of his career, Foeringham’s exit will leave a void in the Rangers squad and Gerrard will have to decide whether to recruit another experience option or give Matt Firth or Robbie McCrorie the chance to shine in the coming seasons.
