Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has confirmed that he would be in to sign Everton’s Joe Williams were he to become available as he impresses on loan at Bolton Wanderers.

The 22-year-old was shipped out to the north west side on a season-long temporary deal in the summer and has established himself as a key player for the Wanderers, playing 21 games before injury forced him onto the sidelines for the start of 2019.

Speaking of the Toffees’ talent, Johnson admitted there would be interest in his capture and the Bristol Post hint that there could be a move made for the midfielder in the summer.

The City boss told the Bristol Post: “Well obviously Joe Williams is a good young player that plays for Everton.

“If he was available at that point then we would have had an interest. I like Joe Williams. He’s a good player.

“But that doesn’t necessarily mean that he would have come in and jumped ahead of anybody that we’ve got. And also he’s not our player. I like a lot of players but I can’t have them all.”

Opinion

A little bit of back tracking there from Johnson, who made his view on the Everton man pretty clear. At 22-years-old, it is evident the midfielder is not going to make a name for himself at Goodison Park and will be considering the next step of his career from now until the end of the season. At Bristol City, he would be joining an ambitious side who have been punching above their weight of late and he could play a key role in any future success of theirs. Of course the Robins are actually chasing a play off spot in the Championship this season and while they might not be anyone’s favourites to actually secure a move to the elite of English football, stranger things have happened. It could be that Johnson is looking for top flight quality to help bolster his side and his interest in Williams could well be thrown to the wayside in pursuit of other targets. Exciting times for the Robins, but will Williams be lining up for them next season?
