Tottenham tend not to spend big. It’s become less of a fact and more of a recurring joke in recent years, but the reality is that when it comes to dipping their toe in the transfer market, they are, to put it mildly, cautious.

Naturally, that means that the club tend to put a greater emphasis on the importance of producing top quality youth players form the academy, and unlike many of their top six counterparts, are actually willing to go out on a limb and put faith in that talent.

One player who absolutely deserves his chance to prove himself, after having spent more than enough time being tipped as the next big thing, is Marcus Edwards.

The 20-year-old made his debut for Spurs back in 2016, but struggled to kick on from there, and has found himself out on loan at Excelsior Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

Finally, however, after months of trying to establish himself as key member of the Dutch side’s squad, he looks as if he might have turned a corner and is ready for his big shot with his parent club.

Edwards was instrumental in his team’s 2-1 comeback win over FC Emmen on Sunday afternoon, scoring one and assisting the winner, and showed flashes of the player he has threatened to go and become for many years now.

He is sharp and smart on the ball, and looks every inch the kind of attacking midfield option that would have Mauricio Pochettino rubbing his hands in glee.

A few more performances like the one on Sunday, and Edwards will force his way into the Argentine’s plans for next season.
