Former Celtic man Jim Duffy has hit out at Rangers, suggestion that Steven Gerrard’s side are too inconsistent to win the league.

The Gers could only register a 0-0 draw against St. Johnstone on Saturday,  result that allowed Celtic to move eight points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

Writing in a column for the Scottish Sun, Duffy questioned the Ibrox side’s title credentials.

He said: “In terms of mounting a title challenge, they are undoubtedly at the point of no return.

“Rangers’ main problem is glaringly obvious. They are consistently inconsistent.

“They have been clinging to Celtic’s coat-tails for most of the campaign and on Saturday they had a real chance to apply some pressure to a side still smarting after their European defeat to Valencia.

“Not for the first time this season, they shot themselves in the foot.”

OPINION

Steven Gerrard will be kicking himself. After beating Celtic at the bak end of December, and having made some eye-catching signings in January, everything was poised for Rangers to make a real go of things in the new year, and really push the Hoops with a title challenge. Instead, he has watched his side stumble and falter, and must now be thinking that their bid for the title is over, with their bitter rivals extending their lead at the top of the table to a huge eight points. That looks fairly insurmountable, and will be a matter of grave concern for Gerrard, who, despite lots of promise and plenty of hype, has very little to show for his first season at the helm in Scotland. He ha built some good foundations, but if his side are serious about challenging Celtic for the title, they need to cut out the underwhelming displays against sides they should be beating.
