Former Leeds player Tony Dorigo has heaped praise on Jamie Shackleton after watching him play this season.
Shackleton has made three Championship starts this season, playing at right-back, and Dorigo has been hugely impressed, saying that the 19-year-old has a “great future” in the game.
Talking on the LS11LUFC podcast that streamed live on Wednesday morning, Dorigo said he was “knocking on the door” of the first-team.
“I saw him [Shackleton] in pre-season and he was playing at right-back despite being a midfielder,” Dorigo said.
“He looked really good. He’s got a great future in front of him. He’s got great technical ability. Every time he’s come on for Leeds he’s done a great job. He’s knocking on the door, for sure.”
OPINION
Shackleton has broken through into the Leeds first-team this season, with a position switch into right-back, and has three Championship starts to his name. He’s currently being kept out of the line-up by Luke Ayling, but his form has been suffering and many Leeds fans want to see Shackleton promoted sooner rather than later. Shackleton is a smart lad who knows how much he’s improving and learning under Marcelo Bielsa, and Tony Dorigo believes he has a great future with Leeds, who could well be in the Premier League next season. It’s always tough for a team to go up and survive but Leeds have so many quality young players, that you have to think they’ve got a real chance of getting up and making their back in the top-flight. Shackleton is one, Jack Clarke is another, and seeing these homegrown players come through and dominate in a tough league like the Championship is a breath of fresh air.
