Wolves’ return to the Premier League has led to a number of standout performers making a name for themselves, and nobody has been as impressive as captain Conor Coady.

The English defender has been exemplary at the heart of defence all campaign, and must be attracting the attention of Gareth Southgate’s England setup.

Calm and assured at the back, he has barely put a foot wrong in his debut top flight campaign, and his profile seems to rise with every passing game.

He was excellent again against Bristol City in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon, and it’s approaching a point where his inclusion in the Three Lions’ squad would be more than justified.

Aside from his fine defensive work, Coady is comfortable on the ball and capable of playing a range of passes that are fundamental to Wolves’ free flowing attacking style, and it’s easy to see how somebody of his abilities could be a real asset to Southgate’s progressive England side.

Competition for places is undoubtedly high, with John Stones and Harry Maguire probably in pole position for starting berths at the moment alongside the injured Joe Gomez, but there’s no reason why Coady shouldn’t be even a chance to prove himself, and could become a very decent squad option going into next summer’s UEFA Nations League.

The 25-year-old is playing for the best side outside of the top six, has shown time and time again that he is capable of handling pressure, and has the natural leadership qualities to be a real success at international level.
