West Bromwich Albion manager Darren Moore has praised midfielder Sam Field for his performance against Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday.

The Baggies struck late to secure a much-needed 3-2 victory over Steve McClaren’s side, but it was one of the more unheralded members of the team who caught the boss’s eye.

“Sam put in a solid performance,” he told the Express & Star. “He uses the ball very well, he’s an intelligent player. He’s a real student of the game. For him to play in that position was excellent.

“He mopped up in front and stopped balls going into (Matt) Smith and when he had the ball at his feet he got us moving up the pitch. It was a mature performance from Sam and he’s another young player starting to grow in stature and he’ll continue to develop, like Rekeem [Harper] and young Kyle Edwards.”

OPINION

It was fantastic to see young Field produce a performance that belied his years against a very good QPR side on Tuesday night. Taking the place of the extremely influential Gareth Barry at the base of the midfield, he played very well and coped with most of what the hosts threw at him at Loftus Road. With the former England international firmly in the twilight of his career the Baggies will need someone to take over for him in the coming years. On Tuesday’s showing Field could potentially be the player to do that. He is very intelligent, as Moore says, and clearly cares about his craft. He obviously works hard on the training pitch and you can see the proof in the pudding come game day. If he can continue to push on now and start more regularly then he can soon become a key player for Moore’s promotion-chasing team.
