Aston Villa resigned themselves to a disappointing 0-0 draw against Reading on Saturday but Dean Smith will no doubt feel that it is two points dropped for his team.

Overall, the majority of his team performed rather well and they could have scored – but there was one man who was particularly underwhelming.

That player was 6ft 1in winger Albert Adomah, who has played 24 games for the side this season – but this performance is one that he would rather forget if he looked back on it.

The 31-year-old was rather ineffective for the entirety of the afternoon and his time on the ball was very few and far between, which is simply not good enough from his perspective.

For a player who is considered a first teamer this season, his display was not up to scratch in the slightest, and he knows he needs to be far more involved in the attack if he is to keep his place in the starting XI.

He needs to realise that his spot in the first team is not guaranteed and this recent outing as only gone to reinforce that. In fact, it must mean that Smith ruthlessly swings the axe on the flyer in order to prevent him hampering the team’s progress any further.

This is yet another game that has passed where Adomah has failed to contribute effectively and there will only be so long that Smith continues to be patient with him.

Yes, he has been a loyal servant to the Aston Villa cause in the last couple of years, but that does not mean that Smith will not be afraid to drop him if it meant improving his team’s chances of winning.

The manager must axe him as soon as possible, as Saturday was just not good enough from him.
