Marcelo Bielsa is compiling background checks on Aaron Lennon as he looks to bring him back to Leeds United at the end of the season, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim the Elland Road boss wants the club to re-sign the winger even though he is out with a knee injury and may not play again in this campaign.

The Sun report Lennon, 31, could be tempted by a return to his boyhood club, where he made his first-team debut aged 16 in 2003 before leaving two years later to join Tottenham.

Good move for Leeds?

Yes, as long as Lennon has properly recovered from the knee injury that has kept him out at December and might not allow him to add to the 22 appearances he has made this season. Following mental health issues, the former England international has rediscovered him mojo at Burnley and proved there are plenty of miles left in the tank. He does not turn 32 until April and is still in great shape. Lennon has not lost much of the extreme pace, either, that has always made him such a handful for defenders. Whether the former Leeds man re-joined the club in the Championship or Premier League, he can be a potent weapon.

Likely to happen?

The journalist who has written the report is a reliable chronicler of Leeds news and was first on to the fact that the Daniel James deal on deadline day could be a loan rather than a permanent one. That said, there are quite a few hoops for United to jump through before landing Lennon, not least the fact he will have a year remaining on his contract at the end of the season and a salary that is likely to be beyond Leeds’ reach.
